After “persistent” urging by NAFA, USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) added a scenario to the 328 Practice for Conservation Crop Rotation to include alfalfa as a “Short-Term Perennial” option. [Note: KSFGC President Clayton Janicke serves on the NAFA Board]
| Currently, NRCS offices in sixteen states have adopted the practice and have released payment scenarios to inform farmers of the unit cost (per acre payment) for incorporating alfalfa into conservation crop rotations. Payments range from $60.44-$79.07/acre depending on state. Find state availability and unit costs below. The payment schedule quarterly release options for states will allow states to add existing payment scenarios moving forward. NAFA representatives have been working on this process for a number of years and will continue to do so until all states have adopted the practice as part of a larger effort to urge Congress and NRCS to “incentivize the use and integration of alfalfa in NRCS programs to capitalize on the unique environmental and conservation benefits it brings to the agricultural landscape.” If your state isn’t on the list, please contact your state’s NRCS Conservationist to encourage them to offer the scenario. If you need assistance, contact the NAFA office (651.484.3888). Click the state below to see their practice scenarios for fiscal year 2025. |
