Although movement picked up a bit, demand remained very light as feed yards are still not buying. Drought and dry conditions in the western two-thirds of the state have dryland crops burning up, and alfalfa headed into dormancy. Pop up storms in recent weeks have also further damaged crops due to high winds and hail. Even despite the setbacks to the hay crop, there is still large amounts of old crop hay available. Premium and Supreme quality hay is more in demand but seems to be hard to find. According to the US Drought Monitor’s High Plains summary for the week of July 30th, Poor soil moisture in much of Kansas brought about widespread 1-category degradations. In eastern Kansas, along the Missouri border there have been reports of dryness and heat stress. Central Kansas has also seen reports of dry ponds and fear of total crop failures. The categorical percent area for abnormally dry conditions (D0) increased to 52.5%, moderate drought (D1) increased to 32%, severe drought (D2) remained at 4%, and no extreme drought (D3) or exceptional drought (D4) was recorded. Prices below reflect the average price. There could be prices higher and lower than those published. USDA-AMS REPORT
